Artificial Intelligence in Logistics | Webinar

2019-07-22 | 5 min Logistics and Manufacturing

Today's logistics, transportation, and supply chain management processes are in the midst of an era of intense transformation. Artificial intelligence is one of the key catalysts for these changes. Learn more about automating enterprise logistics in the webinar Artificial Intelligence in Logistics.

Artificial Intelligence and Logistics Transformation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently one of the technologies with enormous innovation potential. Thanks to the possibilities it brings, artificial intelligence has become a natural part of automation initiatives of companies, especially in the digital transformation of logistics.

Elements of artificial intelligence bring added value to the processes of internal supply, warehouse management (WMS) and material flow optimization.

Augmented intelligence and digital twin

The increasing use of artificial intelligence elements is mainly due to the ability of this technology to process enormous amounts of current information about ongoing logistics processes in real time, including all incoming logistics requirements. In practice, this primarily means increasing the agility and flexibility of supply processes.

The combination of machine and human intelligence, i.e. Augmented Intelligence, is gradually becoming a successful and beneficial solution. Augmented intelligence most effectively contributes to increasing the quality and efficiency of operations performed in transport and supply processes, which ultimately leads, for example, to improving the timeliness of deliveries. Augmented intelligence therefore finds application in a wide range of processes from data processing for decision-making processes to complex supply chain management.

In addition to artificial intelligence, the webinar also focuses on another important technology of smart industry and logistics - the digital twin. The importance of this technology in companies is growing from year to year, also thanks to the increasing number of devices connected to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

The digital twin is often used in monitoring goods, materials and products, in improving the traceability of the origin of a product in the form of its digital birth certificate (traceability), or in simulations of logistics processes. In addition, digital twin technology provides dynamic control of machines, equipment and processes in intra-company and inter-company supply, also using elements of artificial intelligence.

A Forbes Insight study found that 65% of transportation executives believe that logistics, supply chain and transportation processes are experiencing a renaissance - an era of intense transformation. The development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and other related technologies are considered the biggest catalysts for change and innovation.

Reasons for the revolutionary nature of artificial intelligence in logistics:

  • Artificial intelligence preprocesses huge amounts of data, thereby accelerating decision-making processes. Thanks to artificial intelligence, warehouse, supply and transport workers can automate the evaluation of input data in real time.
  • Artificial intelligence technologies are deployed in the digitalization and automation of warehousing processes, which are provided by a new generation of intelligent WMS systems - WES systems (Warehouse Execution System) or Smart Warehouse solutions.
  • Machine intelligence and self-learning algorithms use historical and current data in the dynamic management of intra-company supply and material flows. Algorithms evaluate the turnover of materials or products based on the data obtained and subsequently adapt production planning or order picking to the results.
  • Artificial intelligence and digital twins represent key components for Smart Industry systems that intelligently and autonomously manage individual operations. This means that automation in business processes is changing to autonomization.
